Heerlen in the Netherlands is the place I grew up in. I will not lie, it is a hideous city with more gray colors than others. Although the city has been working on its image of a former coal mine city. There is a lot of empty stores in the city center which is not appealing at all (still, in the neighboring cities and villages you will find enough nature).
