As often you have with city trips in Germany, the old town (Alt Stadt) usually gets your attention. On the bank of the Elbe lies the historical centre with buildings from the Renaissance, the Baroque and kept or regained its charm after its destruction during World War 2.

One of Sister-in-law’s lives here for some years now, but I never got a chance to visit the Alt Stadt, until now.

A City Reborn: First Glimpse of the Frauenkirche and Neumarkt

We begin with Frauenkirche, reconstructed in 2005. The original church wasa bombed in 1945. Erected in the 18th century with it’s iconic stone bell. During our visit there was a cool free event with live music just outside near the Neumarkt, very vibrant! This vibrant, cobblestoned square gives an extra charm!

Zwinger Palace: A Baroque Fantasy

A short walk brought me to the Zwinger Palace, Built 1710-28 by the architect Pöppelmann in collaboration with the sculptor Permoser. It was originally designed as an orangery and a setting for court festivities, and later used for exhibitions. It is the most perfect example of Late Baroque architecture in Germany. Construction of the Semper Gallery 1847-55. Be sure to also just walk around and absord the beautiful architecture surrounding you!

The Procession of Princes: A Story in Tiles

Just around the corner, a 102-meter mural of Saxon rulers — Fürstenzug, the Procession of Princes — flows along a narrow street. It’s made of 25,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, meaning it’s more durable than it looks (and much older than it seems).

Here you can just pause and see this magnificant work of art on Auguststrasse 1.

Brühl’s Terrace: The Balcony of Europe

After that stroll via the Brühlsche Terrasse, perched above the Elbe. L

Very cool next to the wide river, the elegant bridges, the nice plaza and view on the collapsed (in 2024) Carola bridge was quite unique.

Why Dresden’s Old Town will impress you

The beautiful architecture of the Alt Stadt is visible everywhere. Just walk around the numerous of photographic hotspots and enjoy, especially on a sunny day. And see history throughout the years.
